Longmire Details

James Longmire, a pioneer, mountaineer, and entrepreneur who discovered the area's mineral springs in the late 1800s, built his original homestead, a lodge, and a mineral spring resort here in a great effort to establish the area as a visitor destination. The Longmire area became the site of the park's headquarters after the establishment of Mount Rainier National Park in 1899. The park's administration buildings have since moved outside of the park's border, but Longmire still remains the most popular spot in the park and has much to offer visitors. Visit the Longmire Museum, located in the original 1916 headquarters building, which tells the history of the park, the Longmire Wilderness Information Center, where you can gather hiking information and talk to rangers, a gift shop, and the National Park Inn, which has a restaurant and accommodations. You'll also find trailheads for some of the park's most stunning nature and hiking trails, and a picnic area. Take a moment to peek at the old stretch car located outside the Longmire Wilderness Information Center, which was one of several used to take visitors on tours up to Paradise. It's not surprising the entire Longmire area is now designated a National Historic District. Longmire sits in the southwest corner of the park, about 6.5 miles east of the Nisqually Entrance. The museum and inn remain open year-round. Longmire has many hiking trails, but only one trail open to bicyclists: the road behind the volunteer campground in Longmire. Park at the Community Building in Longmire.
