Rampart Ridge Trail Details

This trail leads hikers on a steep climb to the top of a ridge, also known as the Ramparts, which was formed by an ancient lava flow that descended from the summit of Mount Rainier. Find the trailhead across the street from the National Park Inn, at the west end of the Trail of the Shadows. Climb steeply through thick forest, eventually coming out on top of the ridge, where you'll be rewarded with views of Mount Rainier, Eagle Peak, and the Nisqually River valley. Enjoy 1.3 miles of fairly level hiking (reaching a high point of 4,100 feet) before descending on the Wonderland Trail back to Longmire. An added bonus is that this south-facing, low-elevation trail is usually snow-free by June.
