This moderate 2.5-mile, out-and-back route is located near Paradise and typically accessible from mid July into October. You'll run into few people on the less-traveled Moraine Trail, meaning you have a better chance of spotting wildlife along the way, such as pikas, marmots, and mule deer. Find the trailhead just north of the Jackson Visitor Center and follow signs for the Dead Horse Creek Trail. At the next junction, turn left and follow signs for the Moraine Trail. You'll pass through several meadows and patches of evergreens, and enjoy spectacular close-up views of Mount Rainier, the moraine left behind by the Nisqually Glacier, and the headwaters of the Nisqually River. Trail stats: 2.5 miles roundtrip; 400 foot elevation gain; 1 hr. 45 min.
