Mesa Arch Details
Frame the perfect sunrise at Mesa Arch. This half-mile (roundtrip) hike leads you to a stunning overlook of the Colorado River, Greater Canyonlands and the soaring La Sal Mountains. Come at dawn, expect to share the view with others but delight in the magic of this iconic spot. The arch was formed by surface water that slowly pushed through the rock. As a result, this unique arch hangs off the edge of the mesa, 500 feet above the floor of the next visible layer. Play it safe and don't get too close to the precipitous edge! As you meander back to your vehicle, look around at the jungle of fragile cryptobiotic soil. Protect this living crust that when disturbed, takes years to regenerate.
