Aztec Butte Details

A rewarding hike from the Upheaval Dome Road takes you through pretty grasslands to a geologically-unique solitary dome. The trail ascends from the base of the dome where you need to watch for rock cairns that mark the route. Two sandstone granaries are near the top. In ancient times, native peoples would store surplus grains here to feed their families through the cold winter months. Most granaries are situated closer to water sources – why do you supposed these granaries were built at this location? Expansive views of Taylor Canyon and beyond make this 1.3-mile round trip hike an excellent 2 hour excursion. Be prepared for a bit of scrambling on the slick rock dome and don't forget water and sun protection.
