Known for its birdwatching and wildlife viewing opportunities, this park is a great place to learn more about the native species of Texas. Located just a short drive from downtown Houston, this 1,200-acre state park is actually a reservoir, which is home to over 249 species of birds, as well as numerous types of fish and even alligators. The reservoir was originally formed in 1943 during WW1 for shipping-based businesses along the Houston Ship Canal, although it was passed to the state in 1952. When it opened its doors as a state park in 1955, it became a sanctuary for resident wildlife, who flocked to the area to take advantage of the rich ecosystem. Besides birding, visitors can also fish in the recreational area of the park. The waters are explicitly stocked with certain types of fish, including catfish, crappie, sunfish, and largemouth bass.
