Old Tunnel State Park Details

As one of the newest state parks in Texas, Old Tunnel is an abandoned railroad tunnel turned ominous cave that is now home to millions of winged bats. When the Fredericksburg and Northern Railway shut down in 1942, the land was handed over to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, which opened up the state park in 2012. From May to October, visitors will be able to see these elusive creatures as they flee the cave to fly around the park at sunset. In total, there are approximately 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats and 3,000 Cave myotis bats that live in the park. While you cannot enter the cave itself, you'll be able to see them from the bat viewing deck as they emerge from the opening. Although bat viewing is by far the most popular activity in the park, there is a half-mile nature trail that makes for a leisurely hike. Along the way, you'll be able to spot other animals and birds. - Entrance Fees - No Entrance Fee: Free Reservations are available [online] (https://texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/old-tunnel-state-park/r/facilityDetails.do?contractCode=TX&parkId=1200067) or by calling (512) 389-8900
