A short 45-minute drive from Fort Worth drops you off in the middle of cattle country at this state park. It caters to all types of visitors, with an abundance amount of activities on both land and water. During the 60s and 70s, the growth of neighboring cities required a larger supply of water. At the time, Mineral Wells was relying on Lake Mineral Wells as its main water source, although this was quickly becoming less efficient, even with the construction of a damn. As a result, the city stopped using the lake and donated it to the state to be turned into a public park instead. The park has 31 miles of trails to choose from, including the defunct railway route that was turned into a walking and cycling path. There's also Penitentiary Hollow, a small, natural rock canyon that is used for top-rope rock climbing.
