Red Waterfront Trail Details
Situated on the eastern shore of Lake Mineral Wells, this trail boasts fantastic views of the water peeking out in between the tree-line forests. As you approach the lake, the trail clears so you can enjoy the picturesque landscape up close. However, it is not just the sparkling lake that attracts hikers. About 1/3 into the trail is Penitentiary Hollow, a rocky canyon that has four massive oak trees in the crevice. It is awe-inspiring to see their trunks growing straight out of the red canyon floor, reaching high above the steep walls. The entire trail is only 1.5 miles long, which makes it the perfect outdoorsy day trip for those staying in nearby Dallas/Fort Worth.
