Guadalupe Mountains National Park Details
Once an underwater reef, the Guadalupe Mountains of west Texas now rise more than 8,000 feet over the Chihuahuan Desert, including Texas' highest point, the 8,749-foot Guadalupe Mountain. Both the desert lowlands and mountain heights are part of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, best enjoyed by hiking its 80 miles of hiking trails. These include the 8.4-mile, eight-hour trek to the top of Guadalupe Mountain, the more moderate Devil's Hall Trail into Pine Springs Canyon, or the easier but more populous McKittrick Canyon Trail. The Permian Reef Trail — which gains 2,000 feet of elevation in just 4.2 miles — offers the best insight into the park's geological origins. The park visitor center is located near the Pinery, an old Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach stop, and the main Pine Springs campground. The remote Dog Canyon, a 120-mile drive from the visitor center, is a remote section of the 86,416-acre park popular with backpackers but also offering more moderate hiking trails for daytrippers. Abandoned ranches and the majestic Salt Basin Dunes are other popular attractions in the park; other activities include horseback riding, birding, and stargazing in this so-called "Island in the Desert." Established: October 15, 1966 Area: 86,415.97 acres Website: [http://www.nps.gov/gumo/index.htm](http://www.nps.gov/gumo/index.htm)
