Guadalupe Peak Details
At 8,751 feet above sea level, Guadalupe Peak is the highest point in Texas and the mountain that gives the entire Guadalupe Mountain Range its name. Texas is known best for its flat, open expanses, so this majestic peak and the range of smaller mountains surrounding it, is quite the spectacle. It is a remnant of the Capitan Reef, a horseshoe-shaped limestone reef that once ringed the edge of an ancient inland sea here. Today its ridgelines are covered in pine forests, and afford stunning views of the surrounding desert valley. There is a metal plaque at the top of the peak, commemorating the Butterfield Overland Mail Company. The summit of Guadalupe Peak is also a popular place to view sunsets and sunrises in the park.
