Fort Richardson State Park Details
With a history that goes back over 150 years, this park is one of Texas' most beloved landmarks. At its center is the iconic Fort Richardson, a military post that was once the largest U.S. Army building in the country. Although it was only active between 1867 and 1878, it played a vital role in protecting north-central Texas during the Civil War. The fort itself is a U.S. National Register of Historic Places, U.S. National Historic Landmark, and a Texas State Historic Site. Although it's one of the big attractions in the park, there are still plenty of other outdoor activities to do while you're there. There are over 12 miles of trails to explore and even a 9-mile scenic train that takes you from one end of the park to the other. The park is also home to two different lakes, which means you can get your fill of water sports and activities like fishing, swimming, or kayaking. After taking a tour of the fort, you can relax on the shore, enjoying the blissful views.
