George S. Mickelson Trail Details

The Mickelson trail runs 109-miles from Edgemont, S.D., to Deadwood, S.D. The trail is mostly flat and surfaced witg crushed gravel, and it shows off everything that the Black Hills have to offer: streams and lakes, prairies and forests, mountains and canyons, and herds of wild buffalo. The trail is open to bikers, hikers, walkers, runners or anyone wishing to get out for a few minutes, a few hours or a few days. There are 14 trailheads along the way, including the Mountain Trailhead three miles north of Custer, S.D., on Highway 385; a trailhead directly across the street from the Custer chamber of commerce; a trailhead on Highway 85 one mile south of the town of Lead; and a trailhead 12 miles north of Hill City on Mystic Road. Since most of the trail is on Black Hills National Forest land, you can camp almost anywhere you choose. A few sections of the trail cross private land, however, so access in those points is limited to the trail itself. The first sections of this trail were built in the early 1990s. The impetus for the trail came from then-governor George S. Mickelson, who wanted to showcase the beauty and diversity of the Black Hills.
