The town of Custer also has pioneer roots. It was established by miners during the Black Hills gold rush of the 1880s, and gets its name from General George Armstrong Custer, whose military expedition was responsible for discovering the first flecks of gold in nearby French Creek. Custer is right at the heart of all of the action in the Black Hills, just minutes away from Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse National Memorial, and the many lakes, hiking and biking trails of the Black Hills National Forest. Black Hills Aerial Adventures offers a helicopter tour of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. There are a number of B&Bs and guest ranches in the area, such as the Dakota Dream B&B and Horse Hotel. Bear Rock features cabins and full-size vacation homes, while Black Hills Bungalows has great views of the Needles. The Big Pine and Beaver Lake campgrounds are among the other lodging options in the Custer area.
