If you want to be close to all of the action in the Black Hills region, Custer, S.D., is a great place to visit. Located at the heart of the Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway, at the intersection between Highway 385 and Route 16A, the town of Custer is just minutes away from Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, the Crazy Horse Memorial and Devil's Tower. Wind Cave National Park is just south of Custer, and Jewel Cave National Monument is just to the west. Custer State Park has some great hiking trails, and the George S. Mickelson Trail is accessible from right in downtown Custer. Rock climbers will love the easy access to the Needles, a nearby climbing destination. There are diverse lodging options in town, including hotels, B&Bs, cabin rentals and campgrounds. The town also has several shopping and dining options, including the Bitter Esters Brewhouse, which serves house-made beer and sausages. Custer is named after General George Armstrong Custer, who was leading a military expedition when he and his troops discovered gold in nearby French Creek, setting off the Black Hills gold rush of the 1870s. Custer was later killed in the Battle of the Little Big Horn.
