Crow Peak Trail Details

For those in good shape, Crow Peak is a physically challenging and historically interesting hike. Millions of years ago, the Black Hills hid under an ocean. Sediment built up on the sea floor and was gradually pushed upwards by molten magma. As the ocean receded, the sedimentary rock began to erode, exposing the hardened volcanic magma. Crow Peak, along with other mountains in the region, is the result of this interesting geological process. The name Crow Peak derives from a battle between the Crow and Sioux tribes. The Sioux were victorious and named the peak after their defeated enemy. The trail leading to the top of Crow Peak is a difficult 3.7 miles, with an overall elevation gain of 1,500 feet. The trail is located in the northwest region of the park, off of FSR 214.
