Big Hills Trails Details

This network of trails totals 13.6 miles, including five loops and one spur trail. Nineteenth-century prospectors nearly got stuck trying to ride over the "big hills" here with their horses and wagons filled with heavy gold. Today, you can hike or bike on these trails, which range from easy to strenuous. The trails, named Loop A, Loop A1, Loop Loop B, Loop C, Loop D, and Loop D1, meander through pine, birch, and aspen forests. Spur D1 is one of the best routes, climbing to a lookout point with views of Spearfish Canyon and Spearfish Mountain. Across all 13.6 miles of trail, the system gains about 450 feet in elevation. During the winter, the trails are groomed for cross-country skiing. To access the trails, take FSR 134 south from Spearfish for about eight miles.
