Crazy Horse Memorial Details
Not far from Mount Rushmore is the Crazy Horse Memorial: a privately-funded project with a mission to protect and preserve the culture, traditions, and living heritage of the Native Americans. Construction of the memorial began in 1947 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, who went to the Black Hills to help Gutzon Borglum with Mount Rushmore; the first blast on the sculpture of Crazy Horse was in 1948. Work on the mountain continues to this day, and six of Korczak's 10 children and 23 of his grandchildren are still toiling on the project. The entire carving is expected to be 641 feet long and 563 feet high; Crazy Horse's face is 87 feet, six inches (completed in 1998).
