Crazy Horse Monument Details
Just a few minutes north of Custer, along Highway 385, you'll come to the Crazy Horse Monument, the oldest active mountain-carving project in the country. The project was started in 1948 by Korczak Ziolkowski and Lakota Native American Chief Henry Standing Bear, and commemorates Native American history in South Dakota with a monumental sculpture of Lakota chief Crazy Horse. After Ziolkowski's death in 1982, his family decided to carry out his vision. The monument was dedicated in 1998, and blasting work is currently being done to carve out the horse that Crazy Horse sits upon. When completed, the sculpture will stand 563 feet tall. Visitors can observe the work in progress from a viewing veranda, as well as visit the Indian Museum of North America and the Native American Cultural Center. Grab a bite to eat at the Laughing Water restaurant, or find souvenirs at the gift shop. If you're visiting in the summer, stick around for the evening light show.
