Wizard Summit Trail Details
This moderate hike to the top of Wizard Island affords a unique view of Crater Lake and the steep cliffs that line the lake on all sides. The one-mile round-trip hike takes you up a steep, rocky path to the island's summit, gaining roughly 700 feet. Once at the top, you can walk the path around the island's summit caldera, a miniature version of the crater formed by the explosion on Mount Mazama (this one is only 90 feet deep, as opposed to Crater Lake's nearly 2,000-foot-deep caldera). The only way to access Wizard Island is by hiking down the steep Cleetwood Cove Trail from the Caldera rim. At the shores of Cleetwood Cove, you can take a tour boat that stops at Wizard Island. While on the island you can also hike along the shores of Fumarole Bay, fish, swim, or just take in the scenery.
