Fort Klamath, Ore. Details
The town of Fort Klamath is named after a military outpost that was built here in the mid-1800s on the western end of the Oregon Trail. The fort protected western settlers and played a crucial role in The Modoc War, in which hundreds of Native Americans attempted to flee the Klamath Reservation. The original fort does not remain, but a museum has been erected on the site of the original guardhouse. Nearby Collier Memorial State Park features a logging and railroad museum, pioneer village, and campground. Fort Klamath sits to the southeast of the park roughly in between Crater Lake and Klamath Lake. From the south entrance to the park, drive east on route 62 until you come to Fort Klamath. The small town has a few lodging options, including Crater Lake Country Suites (one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites, cottages, and several full-sized houses), the Collier Memorial State Park Campground (65 tent and RV sites), The Aspen Inn (queen beds, A-frame cabins, suites, and a historic wagon house), Jo's Motel and Campground (rooms, cottages, campsites, and RV sites with hookups), the Crater Lake Bed and Breakfast, and the Crystalwood Lodge. You can get food at Jo's Organic Camp Store and Deli, located at Jo's Motel & Campground. They have a full range of fresh meat and dairy products, fresh and frozen produce, chips, ice cream, and more. Jo's also serves breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, and coffee. Also in the area is Harriman Springs Resort Restaurant, located at Rocky Point on the edge of Upper Klamath Lake.
