Pemigewasset Wilderness Area Details
Home to mighty rivers, rugged mountain ranges, and 45,000-acres of unspoiled landscapes, this protected area is more scenic spots in New Hampshire. It also happens to be a paradise for nature lovers, with plenty of opportunities for recreational activities like hiking, cross-country skiing, and backpacking. And while the views and landscapes are incredibly beautiful, that sadly always has not been the case. Between 1880 and 1940, this area of the White Mountains was heavily logged, with over 1 billion board feet of timber being removed from the mountains. It was also home to the largest logging railroad system in the region. Since the 1984 New Hampshire Wilderness Act, the park has slowly started to regrow what was lost over the last century.
