Mount Major Details
Although most mountain summits are rated as moderate or difficult, this is one of the few treks that can be hiked by beginners and families. It is only 1.5 miles to the top, and the elevation gain of 1,100-feet is manageable over this distance. The trail is mostly shaded by trees with massive boulders scattered throughout the way. It does become a bit rockier as you reach the summit, although it will eventually clear and you will be rewarded with vast sweeping views over Lake Winnipesaukee and the White Mountains. You will also find the ruins of Mr. Phippens Hut, which was used as a shelter for hikers in the early 1900s.
