Chesterfield Gorge Natural Area Details

You would not believe that this tranquil 13-acre park is located just a few steps from the busy Route 9 highway. It is known for its scenic rocky gorge and flowing streams of waterfalls supplied by Wilde Brook. This land was donated to the state in the mid-1940s by a local farmer named George White. He bought the gorge in 1936 to prevent it from being destroyed by clear-cut loggers. Thanks to him, visitors can now enjoy the unspoiled hemlock forests as they were meant to be enjoyed. Besides the gorge and forest, the park also has a visitor center and store (only open seasonally) as well as a .7-mile nature trail that winds along the brook.
