Granite Park Chalet Trail Details
The most popular way to reach Granite Park Chalet is as part of the Highline Trail, which starts at Logan Pass and treks along the Garden Wall, offering incredible views along the way, as well as occasional wildlife sightings of big horn sheep, mountain goats and deer. Most people hike to the chalet and then continue on to the Loop where you can catch a shuttle back to Logan Pass, for an 11.8 mile hike. This is a popular hike and you'll have to share the trail. The Highline Trail usually opens at the beginning of July depending on weather. You can also reach Granite Park Chalet from the Loop Trailhead. It's much shorter — only about four miles — but it gains more than 2,000 feet and travels through a burned forest where there is little shade. Most people opt for the longer hike, which offers some of the best views in the park. You can also stay at the historic chalet with advance reservations. Granite Park Chalet was built in 1914 and 1915 by the Great Northern Railway. It was the last of the chalets the railroad built, and one of only two that still exist today. The rustic lodge is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. Even if you aren't staying at the chalet, it's a great place to rest as you finish the Highline Trail. Remember, Glacier is grizzly country. Carry bear spray, make noise and travel in groups. Access is via The Loop or Highline Trailheads. Distance is 7.6 miles from the Highline Trailhead near the Logan Pass Visitor Center or 4 miles from the Loop Trailhead.
