Granite Park Chalet Details

Begun in 1914 and completed in 1915, Granite Park Chalet was built in the heart of Glacier by the Great Northern Railway to provide backcountry accommodations for hikers. It was the last chalet built by the railroad, and one of only two backcountry chalets still in operation; the other is Sperry Chalet. Today, the lodge is listed as a National Historic Landmark. It sits in the heart of the park at an elevation of 6,693 feet, and is reachable by trail only. Beginning at Logan Pass along the Going-to-the-Sun Road, the most popular route to the lodge is the Crown of the Continent Highline Trail, commonly called The Highline. The chalet is also accessible via the 4.2-mile Loop Trail, which is the easiest route, and the challenging Swiftcurrent Pass Trail -- 7.6 miles long, with a 2,200-foot elevation gain. The lodge offers limited services, but hikers may pre-order food and fresh linens, rather than carrying in a backpack. There's a rustic kitchen in which hikers can prepare their own meals, but no silverware or dishes are provided. Guests must also provide their own water, which they can carry in, haul in from a creek 1/4-mile away, or purchase at the chalet. Hikers must pack out everything that they packed in, including leftover food waste. The chalet is generally open from late June to early September.
