Massabesic Experimental Forest Details
Originally farmland, the Massabesic Experimental Forest of Southern Maine has a long history of use. Abandoned as the Great Depression hit and overgrown with stands of northern red oak and white pine trees, it was purchased years later for rehabilitation. Again deserted because of the onset of WWII, it was soon after ravaged in massive wildfires. Though much was salvaged for lumber and reuse, the forest has slowly recovered naturally. Today, visitors are welcome to hike, bike, and explore the trails through the reestablished overgrowth of stoic giant pines.
