Fort Popham State Historic Site Details
Situated only two miles away from one of Maine's busiest beach, Fort Popham State Historic Site is an old fortification originally dating to the Civil War era and the Popham colony. The fort was first established in an effort to protect settlers and defend the country and, at the time, were mainly instituted to enforce the embargo against Britain. The act was unpopular and the small garrisons were often called "embargo forts." Being built of granite, once modernized artillery came around Fort Popham was rendered obsolete to most military uses. Today, visitors can still view the ruins over the Kennebec River. Facilities: Picnic Area, Parking, Restrooms
