The Knife Edge Details
Many consider this trail to be the signature trademark of Katahdin - limitless views, dramatic drop-offs of 2,000 feet or more and only a few feet wide in places. However there is no underestimating the potential danger of this trail. During high winds and inclement weather, the route can become impassable. If you are afraid of heights, you should avoid it. The trail is experienced numerous accidents over the years - some fatal. Always keep and eye on the weather and respect one another's personal limits. From Pamola Peak, the trail heads southwest, descending a 20 foot notch between "The Chimney" and Chimney Peak. After a challenging climb to Chimney Peak, the Knife Edge technically begins. For the next mile, the trail will ascend and descend over some of the most challenging terrain on the East Coast as it proceeds up to Baxter Peak. There are no climbing aids along the trail so you must be prepared to climb self-supported. The trail ends at Baxter Peak.
