Great Basin Details
Mount Katahdin is not only "The Greatest Mountain," but it also has its own Great Basin sitting at the bottom. Carved by a glacier into a horseshoe type shape with a glacial lake, known as Chimney Pond, at its base, the spot is serene. Though most of New England is made of such geological features, this one is a truly stunning sight. With the lake reflecting the already towering peaks of Mount Katahdin and surrounding cliffs of the glacial bowl, there is no wonder as to why so many hikers venture here to try out some backcountry camping.
