Sieur de Monts Details
Originally named for a 17th century governor of New France, today Sieur de Monts Spring is a monument to the vision of Acadia's first Park superintendent and early champion, George P. Dorr. Pathways will lead you to a variety of sights, including the Spring House, built over the Sieur de Monts Spring by Dorr in 1909. Look for the nearby rock where Dorr carved, "The Sweet Waters of Acadia." The Abbe Museum, which contains a collection of stone tools and other archeological exhibits, will help you learn more about the prehistoric people who originally settled this region. The Wild Gardens of Acadia, also located at the spring, focuses on native plants and recreates many of the Park's habitats, from bogs to meadows, shorelines and mountain summits. You can enjoy three of these Acadia habitats by taking an easy hike along the Jesup Path and Hemlock Trail. You'll pass through a birch forest, meadows, and a hemlock forest. The trail begins behind the Acadia National Park Nature Center, where exhibits highlight the work of park biologists and researchers.
