Abbe Museum (Sieur de Monts) Details
A contemporary of George B. Dorr, the park's first superintendent, Dr. Robert Abbe, a surgeon from New York, was fascinated by the history of the area's native people and their prehistoric ancestors. With the purchase of a collection of ancient stone tools, Abbe's amateur archeology hobby was sparked. His determination to collect the objects and stories of Maine's prehistoric and American Indians resulted in the building of the octagonal museum that today houses one of Maine's best archeological collections. The museum is open mid-May to mid-October. Admission is $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for children under 12. Free to Native Americans. The Abbe Museum also operates a second museum in Bar Harbor that focuses on the Wabanaki people and their four tribes, the Penobscot, the Passamaquoddy, the Micmac, and the Maliseet.
