Located a few miles south of Starved Rock State Park, Matthiessen State Park, in Deer Park, Illinois, is situated on 1,700 acres and was established in 1943. A stream that is central to the park has eroded a pathway through sandstone which has created scenic rock formations. Salt licks and mineral springs can also be found in several locations around the park. Several species of moss, ferns, and liverworts, flourish in the park, when other visitors may see the occasional bald eagle. Whitetail deer are plentiful in the park, as are a variety of salamanders, toads, and frogs.
