Springfield, Ill., is the town most closely associated with the life of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, who lived here from 1844 until he assumed the presidency in 1861. The Lincoln Home National Historic Site includes the 12-room house owned by Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln on the corner of Eighth and Jackson streets and a surrounding, four-block historic district. In addition to touring the only house Lincoln ever owned -- donated to the state of Illinois by Robert Todd Lincoln in 1887, and restored by the National Park Service to its 1860 appearance -- visitors can also take tours of two other nearby homes and stroll the streets of the 12-acre historic district.
