Springfield Is fifth capitol building has a rich history that dates back almost 200 years. After being built, it was used as the statehouse from 1840 until 1876. Abraham Lincoln worked here during his final term as a state lawmaker, and even made his House Divided speech and announced his candidacy for US Senate in the Illinois House chamber. After the announcement of a new capital building, this structure was used as the county courthouse until 1966. Since then, any of the rooms inside have been restored to their original appearance in the mid-1800s in order to preserve their heritage. Free guided tours are conducted through the capital building daily.
