Allerton Natural Area Details
This 1,500-acre preserve is one of the last three remaining areas in the state with more than 500-acres of the forest. This contiguous habitat is crucial for migrating birds and other native wildlife, as it provides a protected place for nesting, breeding, and feeding. As such, numerous endangered creatures have been spotted living within the natural area, including the eastern massasauga, the Kirtland is water snake, and the black-billed cuckoo. There are four different trails where you can explore the forest, meadows, and prairies at your leisure. You can also attend one of their themed guided hikes (like a tree identification tour or late-night full moon hike) which are held each month.
