Leleiwi Overlook Details

Heading up toward Haleakala's summit, visitors should pull into the parking lot on the right side of the road at mile 17.5 to visit Leleiwi Overlook. Cross the road on foot and take the .5-mile trail to a wind shelter with a great view of the cinder cones and cliffs of the Wilderness Area. At 8,840 feet, this area is a boundary zone between the park's sub-alpine shrubland and the alpine cinder desert, and the cliffs below the overlook are seasonal nesting grounds for the 'ua'u, or Hawaiian petrel. If you visit at sunset between March and October, you may hear the birds returning to their nests.
