Fort Frederica National Monument Details
Built at a time when Spain and Great Britain were battling for possession of North America, Fort Frederica was established on St. Simons Island to protect Georgia from Spanish raiders from Florida. Named for the son of King George II, the fort and surrounding town were constructed between 1736 and 1748 by James Oglethorpe, founder of the British colony of Georgia. At its peak, the complex had up to 1,000 inhabitants, including the hundreds of British soldiers who -- led by Oglethorpe -- turned back a Spanish invasion in 1742 and blunted Spain's dreams of northern expansion. Visitors can view remnants of the fort and town as well as the site of the Battle of Bloody Marsh, a key action in the conflict.
