Cumberland Island National Seashore Details

Miles of undeveloped and isolated beaches and wilderness areas of maritime forests and marshes characterize Cumberland Island National Seashore, located on Georgia's largest barrier island. Accessible by ferry from St. Mary's, Ga., the park has both primitive and developed campgrounds for an overnight stay on an island that features evidence of long Native-American habitation; other residents and landowners have included Revolutionary War Gen. Nathaniel Greene, Thomas Carnegie (who built his Dungeness estate here), and a small community of African-American workers who lived here in the 1890s. Hiking and biking are the best ways to tour Cumberland Island: there are 50 miles of hiking trails here as well as a network of paved roads where bikes are permitted. Bird- and wildlife watching are popular activities in this 36,400-acre park, and visitors also can see the ruins of Dungeness and the still-standing Plum Orchard estate.
