Cumberland Island

Georgias largest barrier island is a paradise for nature lovers. Almost 10,000 acres are designated conservation wilderness, including the protected national seashore. The island is a rugged and wild mix of salt marshlands, sand dunes, and coastal tidal pools that are teeming with various wildlife. Wild boars, nine-banded armadillos, and even feral horses can be seen roaming through the area. Besides natural beauty, this island also has an extensive history that dates back 4,000 years. Not only was the area an indigenous settlement, but it was also a colony for Spanish explorers and one of the first cotton plantations in the state.
