Cumberland Island's Beaches

Although there are plenty of barrier islands along the Georgia coast, this one is considered to be the most undeveloped of them all. Although it is the largest island in the state, over 10,000 acres are completely protected by the National Park Service. As a result, there are quite a few natural beaches where you can rest undisturbed. The rolling dunes are home to various creatures like ghost shrimp, clams, horseshoe crabs, while manatees, dolphins, and turtles can all be found offshore. If you happen to be visiting at night, you will even get the chance to see the twinkling glow of bioluminescent plankton in the ocean waves.
