During the U.S. Civil War, Chattanooga, Tenn., was a vital rail, road, and river hub that was fiercely contested by Union and Confederate armies, which clashed in two major battles here in 1863. The Battle of Chickamauga was a Confederate victory that required Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant to rush in reinforcements to save his troops, which set the stage for Union victories at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, winning control of Chattanooga in the process. Park visitors can tour battlefields little changed from their Civil War appearance. Visitor centers located at Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain tell the stories of these major battles.
