Long Pine Key Trails Details
The Long Pine Key Trails connect a trail system spanning a total length of 22 miles. Most of these trails start around the Long Pine Key Campground, which is located 7 miles from the Ernest Coe Visitor Center in Homestead. The actual Long Pine Key Trail is 7 miles long, terminates at Pine Glades Lake, and only lightly traveled. Not many people frequent the lake, so it can be a great place to see birds, picnic and fish (not that you cannot swim in the lake). It's gorgeous at sunrise or sunset, so bring your camera. Accessible year round, there's plenty of opportunity to see wildlife, and the trail works for all skill levels, as it's longer, but doesn't ascend. You can also take your bikes on the trail if hiking isn't preferable. The Pineland trail is a half mile round trip, and loops through a forest of pines and wildflowers. This trail is wheelchair accessible, though it can be narrow and uneven in places where the roots have pushed through the ground. Similar to the Pineland Trail, the Mahogany Hammock Trail is only a half mile, and also loops through a forest - though much denser and jungle-like. Lush vegetation lines the boardwalk, including gumbo-limbo trees, air plants, and the largest living mahogany tree in the United States. The trail is wheelchair accessible.
