Nike Missile Base Details
Refresh your knowledge of American history by visiting a Nike missile base in the Everglades, a relic of the Cold War. The base, which is virtually unchanged since it's closure in the late 1970s, was built in 1964, following the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. The location of the guided surface-to-air missile launch site was strategically chosen, as the base sits approximately 160 miles from the Cuban coast. The base is included on the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Register of Historic Places and consists of 22 buildings and structures. Included are three missile barns, a missile assembly building, a guard dog kennel, and a barracks. The base is open to visitors via a ranger guided walk, offered from December to April. If you have 20 or more people in your group, reservations are recommended.
