Halfway Creek Paddling Trail Details

This 7.28-mile water trail is all about the flora. Located on the Tamiami Trail near Everglades City, the canoe and kayak trail is dense with trees, ferns, and bushes. The trail itself is extremely well marked, however, with sign posts that correspond to an excellent trail map available from the Big Cypress Welcome Center. The Halfway Creek Paddling Trail also offers great flexibility: you can paddle Halfway Creek in a morning or afternoon (about 4-5 hours), or continue to the Barron River (an optional loop) to make your trip into 11-mile, all-day outing. Alternatively, you can arrange with an outfitter to make this a one-way paddle to Everglades City. There are some downsides: don't expect to see too many birds or wildlife; instead, you'll be serenaded by the near-constant drone of airboats. Overall, though, the exotic plants and flexibility of this paddle trail make it a popular option for visitors looking to spend some time on the water. Put in at the boat dock behind Big Cypress Welcome Center, just a few miles east of Highway 29. There's lots of parking at the welcome center as well as maps. Be forewarned that traveling Halfway Creek between mid-April and mid-December can be hot and buggy; the best time to visit is during the dry season, from mid-December to mid-April.
