North and South Coaling Docks Details

Outside of Fort Jefferson you can see the remains of two coal docks, one on the north side and the other on the south side, just to the left after you disembark from the ferry. These coaling warehouses were constructed in 1898 to serve as a supply depot for U.S. navy vessels in the area. The fort was no longer in use as a defensive fortification, but the Navy realized the islands strategic location and invested in warehouses, docks, and a 60,000 gallon water distilling plant for freshwater.
