At 12,095-feet above sea level, this mountain pass between Aspen and the Twin Lakes has some of the best scenic views in the entire state. There is a small overlook that features unobstructed views of Mount Elbert and La Plata Peak to the east, as well as Maroon Bells, Snowmass Mountain, and Capital Peak to the west. At the base of the mountains is the rolling alpine tundra which covers the ground in a thick blanket of shrubs and grasslands. After soaking in the views, you can choose to do an array of outdoor excursions nearby, such as rock climbing, swimming, fishing, and cycling. Although the pass is not open during the winter, it is still possible to go backcountry skiing along the slopes in spring and early summer.
