The 792,500-acre Baca National Wildlife Refuge in southern Colorado is located within the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area, and is home to many diverse bird species like great horned owl, northern flicker, robin, yellow warbler, and Bullock's oriole, as well as waterfowl including mallard, white-faced ibis, egret, and heron. Consisting of rangeland and some riparian wetlands, the Crestone Creek inhabits four native fish species. The refuge protects the great sand dunes and water sources of the area.
