Liberty Gate Trailhead Details

Located just outside the northern park boundary, the Liberty Gate trailhead grants access to the backcountry of Great Sand Dunes. From the trailhead you can hike Liberty Stage Road or continue off-trail over the flatlands. Expect to see elk, a possible meteor crater (scientists are still determining the cause of the depression), and views of the Crestone Peaks. You can get to Liberty Gate by taking Camino Baca Grande south from County Road T until you reach the junction with Camino Real. Turn right aon Camino Real and drive about a mile until you reach Wagon Wheel Road. Turn left here. You will come to a junction with Camino del Rey: turn left here and follow the road to where it ends at Camino Baca Grande. From here, it is about a mile to the Liberty Gate parking area.
