The Ansel Adams Gallery Details

Ansel Adams was a photographer and environmentalist who was born in San Francisco in 1902. His love of nature was nurtured in the Golden Gate area, but it was when he first saw Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada that he found his true calling. Every year from 1916 until his death, he visited Yosemite and found himself transfixed and transformed by the area's natural beauty. He began taking photographs with a Kodak No. 1 Box Brownie camera his parents had given him. Since he enjoyed hiking and exploring, in 1919, he joined the Sierra Club and spent the first of four summers in the Yosemite Valley as a keeper of the club's LeConte Memorial Lodge. It was with the help of the Sierra Club that Adams found success as a photographer. His first published photographs and writings appeared in the club's 1922 Bulletin and his first one-man exhibit was in the club's San Francisco headquarters in 1928. Today, Ansel Adams' images of Yosemite have become some of the most immediately recognizable photographs ever taken. You can buy reproductions of Adams' famous works documenting the American West at his namesake gallery and browse through frequent exhibitions of works by contemporary photographers. The Gallery was originally constructed in 1904 and belonged to artist Harry Best, who later became Ansel Adams' father-in-law. Gallery staff lead free summer camera walks on Mondays at the Ahwanee Hotel and every day but Wednesday from the Gallery porch, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The gallery is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 209/372-4413, or visit http://www.anseladams.com.
